Elizabeth Falkner And Citizen Cake

She mixes bacon with ice cream, uses a huge blow torch on creme brûlée and built a nitrogen bar at one of her restaurants on Fillmore Street. Elizabeth Falkner, is one of the true creative geniuses out there that works with a passion unlike any I’ve ever seen. I’ve been working with her for over 20 years now and what began as a small business card here and there for catering projects, Elizabeth has become one of the most renowned and successful brands I’ve ever partnered with.

Featured across a huge range of media outlets like; The New York Daily News, Grub Street, 7×7, W Magazine, The San Francisco Chronicle, Iron Chef, Top Chef, and so much more, she’s arguably one of the most recognized food celebrities of the past decade.

Citizen Cake, Elizabeth’s signature San Francisco restaurant and patisserie, was the largest project I’ve worked on with her to date. Starting with just a logo and business cards my designs spread across signage, packaging, geurilla postings, advertisements, online, mail, menus and even an early website.

Printing the posters above,  the printer thought I was crazy when I said I didn’t care about the registration. I wanted them to look all wonky, and they did. In addition to design, I wrote the copy as well. Elizabeth loved them so much she used some of the lines in her cookbook, “Demolition Deserts”.

Budgets ran tight in the early days which required being as smart as we could with signage and materials. A common solution was to use fun, branded stickers and stamps wherever possible. We even used extra posters and converted them into envelopes.

This project was deliciously fun as I got to design and illustrate the “guide” to her unique and elaborate confectionary concoctions. Elizabeth and I collaborated on selecting the correct type for the correct delicacies, fun was had by all!
